Black Crowes new album
Joanne reports:
Finally got around to reading from the 1/8 Boston Globe about the Black Crowes
new CD, produced by Kevin Shirley, and there are references to Steven and Joe.
Sounds like a great CD. Heres the relevant part of the article.
From the Boston Globe, 1/8/99, pp. D15-D18,
The Black Crowes Tough "Side",
by Steve Morse:
The new album, filled with whiplash
slide guitar and supercharged vocals reminiscent of the bands first album,
"Shake Your Moneymaker", was produced by Kevin "Caveman"
Shirley, who produced Aerosmiths last album, "Nine Lives". He
was recommended by Aerosmiths Joe Perry when Chris Robinson caught up
to Perry, Steven Tyler, and the rest of the band last year in Los Angleles.
The Crowes had once opened for Aerosmith, but hadnt seen them in years.
[Chris Robinson said] "I hadnt seen Steven Tyler in nine years or
something, but he comes over to me, gives me a hug, and says Im
so glad you shaved your beard off. You look great! And I said, Gee,
I didnt even know you knew I had a beard. Then I went to see them
play in Anaheim, and Joe Perry says, Hey, youve got to go to New
York and meet Kevin. His nickname is Caveman. Hed be perfect for you.
So I said to myself that Joe Perry knows what hes talking about. I was
going to New York the next weekend for something else...but I called to meet
Kevin and we hit it off instantly."
Perry, who describes the new Crowes album as "my favorite record right
now", recalls telling Robinson: "I dont know how youll
get along personally, but hell get your sound".
Elaborating on Shirley, Perry says, "Hes called Caveman because he
looks like an Australian kick boxer, and he has hair way past his shoulders.
Hes earthy in his approach. He can be sweet, but he can also be one of
the most bullheaded people that youll ever meet".
...Robinson says, "This record is for a Saturday night. I think you couuld
put it on between [the Rolling Stones] Exile on Main Street
and [AC/DCs] Back in Black or Rocks and those
other great Aerosmith records...."
